Forefoot Pain
Callus, swelling, numbness and pain in the ball of your foot can be caused by Morton’s neuroma or metatarsalgia. Morton’s neuroma is caused by irritation of the nerve tissue between the 3rd and 4th metatarsal heads. It starte from occasional tingling, numbness and then to burning pain in the ball of your foot. Metatarsalgia is a pain around the metatarsal bones, often caused by overuse and overloading. It starts from occational dull pain and then to frequent sharp pain, specially after walking or sports activities.
Anything that causes compression or irritation of the nerve can lead to the development of forefoot pain, such as wearing high heels or improper footwear, abnormal arches, degenerative diseases like arthritis, nerve disorders, diabetes, sesamoiditis, obesity, or simply the aging.
Most forefoot pain can be successfully resolved with conservative treatments, especially if symptoms are addressed early and consistantly.
Nonsurgical Treatment:
- Padding: padding provides support for the metatarsal arch and lessens the pressure on the nerve when walking
- Foot orthotics: custom orthotic devices provide the support needed to reduce pressure and compression on the nerve
- Activity modifications: activities that put repetitive pressure on the neuroma should be avoided until the condition improves
- Proper shoes: wear shoes with a wide toe box and a toe rocker. Avoid narrow-toed shoes or shoes with high heels
- Icing: putting an ice pack on your forefoot for 20 minutes several times a day helps reduce inflammation.
